What to Wear? | Family Sessions

Family, Personal

July 30, 2014

For my past, present and future clients…

I know that deciding on what to wear can sometimes be more of a challenge than choosing your photographer. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing me to photograph your family, it is truly an honour. I know that these are photographs you are going to hang on your wall and cherish for years to come. These are the memories that you will look back on when your children are all grown up. We are capturing more than just an afternoon – we are capturing this exact time in your families life, a time of joy, of growth, of laughter and giggles.
And so, I’ve put together a few tips that will hopefully help you plan what to wear for your families next session!

1) Coordinating colours not matching
Instead, pick a couple of colours and choose clothing that will fit into this scheme.
2) Limit patterns
Now, don’t get me wrong, I love stripes/polka dots/plaid but if everyone wears a pattern it will end up being distracting. Instead choose one family member to wear the pattern that incorporates the majority of colours.
3) Look at your home decor
Do you prefer bright colours or neutrals? If you are going to be hanging these photographs on your wall, your current home decor may be something to consider!
4) Say no to characters (don’t worry, we can still sing all of the most popular disney movie songs!)
Yes, your little ones may love their Toy Story shirt or Frozen shirt or Finding Nemo, but just like patterns – characters too, can be distracting. So better to leave those shirts in the car at let them switch as soon as the session is over! (Everyone wins!)
5) Avoid all white or all black clothing
You want to keep it interesting, and colour does exactly that!
6) Consider your background
Are we scheduling your session to be at the beach or in your backyard? The colours at these locations are definitely something to keep in mind!
7) Be comfortable!
There isn’t much else to it. If you what you’re wearing isn’t comfortable it will show, and that isn’t what we want.
8) Think classic
By choosing simple, classic clothing you will help give your images a timeless feel!

And just in case you wanted some further tips, here’s a few examples of Sarah E Families who have nailed their outfit choices!
(I haven’t had a family yet who hasn’t chosen wonderful outfits! Seriously, you guys are so great!)

1What a perfect use of accessories! From the girls belted dresses to Colleens colourful necklace which ties all the colours together! (Notice how Chucks yellow shorts match the belt on Lindsay’s dress!)

22Again, a perfect use of patterns! Sarah chose adorable matching dresses for the girls and then solids for both herself and Dad. Not distracting and allows you to focus on their beautiful smiles!
